The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week, a perfect time to honor the teachers in your life, past or present. Here are some ways to do just that.

• Offer help. Many teachers are being laid off these days due to education budget cuts. If you can help with resume or job services, hear of a great gig perfect for teachers (perhaps tutoring or mentoring at the local college?), or just be a friend, do so.
• Write a letter. This is one of the all-time favorite gifts for teachers. Write about your favorite things about him/her, what you learned in the teacher’s class, and what the teacher meant to you. One of the best compliments a teacher can receive is, “I never thought of it that way before you showed me.”
• Send a photo. Teachers love photos of their students, particularly their favorites! Send them a photo of your family, of yourself graduating from college, or an important event from your life.
• Make a craft. If you’re honoring a teacher in your child’s life, help make a homemade gift. From these easy picture holders to a pretty (and easy again!) yarn bowl or basket, the ideas are endless. You can always make a simple drawing or handmade card, of course, especially for younger children.
• Offer to help. At the end of the year, many teachers are in a grading, packing, or general frenzy. If you have any educational experience and want to help with grading papers, offer to lend a hand. Maybe you and your family could come help pack up a classroom for the summer. If there are any end-of-the-year celebrations, ceremonies, or other events that could use some volunteers, offer your help.
• Make teacher appreciation kits. Include post-it notes, rulers, a hole puncher, glue sticks, and any other supplies you can think of. Packs of Kleenex, construction paper, chalk, erasers, and other items come in handy as well. If you can’t afford all of these things, purchase one quality item that a teacher would be sure to appreciate, like a great pair of scissors.
• Do something really creative. If your child simply adores his teacher (and you do too), try creating a mini skit, a song, a mock infomercial, or other performance highlighting how special the teacher is. This kind of activity is something that he or she will likely remember for the rest of his or her life.
